Purim, St. Patrick's Day, the arrival of spring, and lent are in March with opportunities for sharing spiritual lessons with children through activities.

Mix fun with spiritual messages that highlight special days.

Purim

Purim celebrates how God used Esther, an orphan, to deliver his people, the Jews. Parades, gifts to the poor, and special cookie treats make Purim a happy holiday. One day the king held a beauty contest and Esther won! She moved to the palace and became the new queen. Enjoy activities to celebrate the feast: Read the story in the book of Esther in the Old Testament. Dramatize it. Make Hamantaschen cookies in the shape of Haman's hat with a sweet poppy seed filling.

St. Patrick’s Day

March 17th is St. Patrick’s Day. It celebrates a man who helped an entire country believe in Jesus. St. Patrick used a shamrock, a three leaf little plant that looks something like clover, to talk about the trinity (the three persons in one God – God the Father; Jesus, who is God the Son; and God the Holt Spirit). He told people what God did in his life. Someone kidnapped him when he was young and made him a slave. God used that time to teach him to love and forgive others. Discuss forgiveness.

Be a witness like St. Patrick. Tell friends and family about Jesus and what God has done. First, make a list of blessings from God, such as home, a family, clothes, school, a great smile, and a beautiful earth. Think of prayers God answered. Each day, try to tell one more person about God and God’s love.

Wear green to represent Ireland, called the Emerald Isle, as well as a symbol of new growth as a Christian. Hide foiled covered gold coins for a treasure hunt and then talk about real and lasting treasures in the Bible.

Springtime Fun

Spring is coming after a very cold winter. It’s time to enjoy the outdoors and signs of new life, warmer weather, and also time to help neighbors and friends. Enjoy some of these activities:

  • Watch the sunrise and set. Figure out the daylight hours on March 21st , called the equinox. On this day the number of daylight hours equals the number of night hours.
  • Cook eggs sunny side up.
  • Read about a time the sun went backwards in Isaiah 38:8.
  • Spy out the first robin and other birds. Listen, look and try to identify each bird.
  • Remember that God says each person is more valuable than birds in Matthew 10:29-31.
  • Garden, whether in pots or a patch of land. Start stirring up the soil and planting seeds. Plant some inside to move outdoors when the soil is warmer.
  • Read the parable about the sower in Matthew 13: 1-9, 18-23 and plant more of God’s word in your heart.
  • Help an elderly neighbor clean out the flower bed or yard.

Other Special March Days

  • March is International Listening Awareness Month! Listen with your eyes and heart too. Look into the speaker's eye. See if you can understand how someone feels.
  • March 15 is Absolutely Incredible Kid Day! God made each child special. Talk and list all the things each child can do.
  • March 1-7 is National Write a Letter of Appreciation Week. Write letters to people who serve the community (teacher, friend, or a local person serving in the military).
  • March 19-25 is National Wildlife Week. Put out food for animals. Check out animals in the Bible in Proverbs 30:30; 1 Samuel 17:34-35; and Isaiah 11:6.
  • March 25 is National Family Day! Eat together today. Think of something fun to do as a family and do it! Pray together at the end of the day to thank God for your family!

Talking about God while having fun makes God more relevant and a natural part of family life.
